Hexapole and Octupole Ion Guides
Hexapole & Octupole Ion Guides
RF-only ion guides are used in various applications, such as collision cells for collision induced dissociation, for collisional damping of ion beams into smaller cross sectional areas, and for simply transporting ions from one part of a vacuum system to another in a differentially pumped system. This section details our range of quadrupole ion guides, quadrupole deflectors, hexapole ion guides, octupole ion guides and associated power supplies.
Octupole ion guides for the highest ion transmission efficiency.
Octupole ion guides are RF-only devices designed to move ions from point A to point B with little or no loss of signal. Octupoles can be used for both ion transport and pressure reduction and are offered with and without housings and entrance/exit lenses and in standard and custom lengths.
Octupole ion guides are recommended when the highest ion signal transmission is required.
RF Power Supply for Octupole Ion Guides
The RF-QPS is the RF only power supply for the octupole ion guide. It is a 200W supply operating at 2.1MHz and includes DC voltages for entrance and exit lenses and also pole bias (mid-axis potential). It is supplied with x 2 1.5m RF cables and AC power cord.
Hexapole ion guides - RF only devices for efficient ion transport.
Hexapole Ion Guides are RF-only devices designed to move ions from point A to point B with little or no loss of signal. They can be used for both ion transport and pressure reduction. They are offered with and without housings and entrance exit Lenses and in standard and custom lengths.
The standard configuration includes a solid housing with entrance and exit lenses. We also supply hexapoles with vented housings or no housing for pressure reduction.
Hexapole ion guides are recommended if the device is to be installed after a high pressure point source for ions, such as an ESI source.
RF Power Supply for Hexapole Ion Guides
The RF-QPS is the RF only power supply for the hexapole ion guide. It is a 200W supply operating at 2.1MHz and includes DC voltages for entrance and exit lenses and also pole bias (mid-axis potential). It is supplied with x2 1.5m RF cables and AC power cord.
Hexapole Collision Cells
The hexapole collision cell was designed to couple a high pressure point source of ions, such as an electrospray source, to a mass analyser. It is conductance limited with a gas inlet port to introduce a buffer gas. The buffer gas can be used for either collision induced dissociation or for phase space compression to collisionally damp the ion beam into a smaller cross sectional area.

Applications
- Octupoles and Hexapoles are designed for maximum ion transmission. The Standard configuration includes a solid housing with entrance and exit lenses. We also offer our octupoles and hexapoles with vented housings or no housing for pressure reduction.
- Quadrupoles are high transmission Quadrupole Mass Filters that can be used as ion guides in applications where Mass Selection is also required. The mass filter is offered with a solid housing, a vented housing, or can be supplied without housing.
- Conical Octupoles are uniquely designed for high transmission of ions from an effusive source and can reduce them to a small spot size while simultaneously providing pressure reduction. They are ideal for use after an ESI Source or after the first orifice of a molecular beam system.
- Collision Cells are designed for use as Reaction Cells or for Collisional Cooling. Extrel’s collision cells use our high transmission octupole ion guides. They are equipped with low gas conductance housings and gas fittings.
